School districts across Southwest and Central Virginia are releasing back-to-school plans as the school year gets closer and coronavirus continues to spread. Students will be in school two days a week and will attend school virtually three days a week starting on Sept. In order to maintain proper health mitigation guidelines, students will be grouped to attend school in-person either on Mondays and Tuesdays A group or Thursdays and Fridays B group.

Bedford County made changes to the reopening plan August 13, voting to push back the start of school to the week after Labor Day. Students will now be required to wear a face covering within six feet of others.
COVID-19 Cases Still Trending Upward in Southwest Virginia
But the numbers in much of the southwest part of the state have been heading in the other direction, which has health professionals worried. The health district that covers the Roanoke Valley and parts of the Alleghany Highlands saw 85 new cases reported Monday. The health districts that cover the Lynchburg, Danville, New River Valley and Grundy areas have also seen new highs in recent days.

WFXR — Now that schools are closed, Feeding Southwest Virginia is looking to fill potential gaps where students may not have access to food. The food bank is partnering with different schools and locations in the area to provide food boxes to families that need them. Feeding Southwest Virginia is also looking for volunteers. A lot of their regular volunteers came as work groups, but with businesses closing and working from home a lot have stopped.

United Way of Southwest Virginia has formed a regional advisory council comprised of donors to the fund, business and nonprofit organizations, and health and human service agencies to develop the response strategy for Southwest Virginia.

More than half of the child care agencies that responded to the survey have closed as a result of the current pandemic. The survey showed that the greatest need people in the region face is food, followed closely by child care.
